My 12 Virtues for Life

  • [First created] 19th Year of Life
  • [Last updated] 23rd Year of Life :D

1. Self-Awareness

I will frequently check my thoughts and behavior for alignment with my values, principles, and intuition.

And when something is not serving me, I will not be afraid to let it go.

2. Discipline

I choose to experience the pain of discipline so that I can escape the pain of regret.

I will do the things I SHOULD do, when I’m SUPPOSED to do them, whether I feel like it or not.

3. Perseverance

When I face obstacles, I will do whatever it takes to pull through while continuing to satisfy my constraints.

I will only quit when:

4. Patience

Good things take time to grow/build/fruition. I will not pull up a seedling just to see if it’s been growing roots or not.

I will, instead, focus on the process—my actions—which is something I can control.

5. Tranquility

No matter what curveballs life throws at me, I will maintain my inner calm.

That calmness comes from focusing on the things I can control: my thoughts, my actions, and my speech.

6. Frugality

I will not waste anything—especially food, water, money, and time.

7. Curiosity

I will approach new ideas, perspectives, and people with open-mindedness.

And then examine them as rigorously and rationally as possible to remove the fluffy components.

8. Respect

I will not act in a way that violates the rights of others, and I will not allow others to violate mine.

I will always take the feelings, wishes, and boundaries of others into consideration.

Even—and especially—if I don’t agree with those wishes, I will remind myself that it is their life and I will respect their decision.

9. Kindness

I will treat others and myself with empathy, compassion, and patience.

I will always ask, ‘How can I help?’ and, if within my means, act accordingly.

If a person takes advantage of my kindness and oversteps my boundaries, I will have enough kindness for myself to let the person go.

10. Reliability

My word is my bond. People can count on me, all the time.

If I cannot commit to something, I will say no at the beginning.

If I quit halfway (according to the exceptions in Perseverance), I will minimize disruptions by:

  • Communicate my intentions early
  • Ensure a smooth handover of my responsibilities

11. Sincerity

I will not feign interest in others or engage in deceitful behaviour.

I will be straightforward, though not in a hurtful manner (See Respect)

12. Silence

I will avoid gossip and meaningless talk.

My speech should always add value to the lives of others.

Footnotes

*: No actions should be done at the expense of my health, moral, and energetic boundaries. Breaks can be taken if quitting is not obviously beneficial nor immediately possible.
